Thanksgiving: A Cornucopia of Scent Memory...
In the fragrance world we talk a lot about the connection between scent and memory. One can easily argue that Thanksgiving exemplifies scent memory on steroids! It was hands down my favorite Holiday growing up. The savory smell of the turkey roasting, the sweet + spicy aromas of the pumpkin pies waiting to be devoured and the chestnuts baking in the oven. Along with the delicious smells + tasty food it was also a peaceful day in my family of seven. To this day when I begin to smell the aromas coming out of the kitchen it evokes a peaceful stillness in me. This Thanksgiving think about a memory that the aromas conjure up for you.

What the heck is fractionated coconut oil?
We use fractionated coconut oil as a base in our fragrances. Three years ago when Jennifer was experimenting, blending and playing with fragrance combinations the thing to use in fragrance oils was a chemical additive called "Dipropylene Glycol". To her this didn't sound like anything she wanted to put on her skin, let alone have other people put on theirs. Your skin after all is your largest organ. So she began to research other natural options, she came across information on fractionated coconut oil that works well as a "base". So she tried it and it was perfect. But what IS it?? Here's a great explanation.
What is Fractionated Coconut Oil?
As the name implies, Fractionated coconut oil is a fraction of the coconut oil from which almost all the long chain triglycerides are removed, thus leaving mainly the medium-chain triglycerides and making it an absolutely saturated oil. This saturation gives it a very, very long shelf life and greatly increased stability.
In addition, fractionating raises the comparative concentration of Capric acid and Caprylic acid, thus giving it more of antioxidant and disinfecting effect.
Enjoying Sniffapalooza's Fall Ball in NYC
I had the privilege to present DefineMe to some very sophisticated noses at Sniffapalooza's Fall Ball this past week in NYC. Sniffapalooza is a cult like gathering for fragrance aficionados held twice a year. The founders of "Sniffa" are what we refer to as "The Karens" Karen Dubin and Karen Adams. They created this event where perfumers, chemists + fans come together to discuss all things fragrance!
I'm not gong to lie, I was nervous! What will they think, will they like my scents, will they like my packaging, will they get the intention, my story, will I get their stamp of approval??!
I'm happy to report that DefineMe was very well received, phew!

Fall, the best season of the year!
I LOVE Fall! I love when the weather starts to get cooler and the leaves start to change color. I so enjoy pulling out last years sweaters, jackets, scarves and boots that have been tucked away in my closet for months! I see it as sort of another Spring...a good time to change things out, get rid of the old and bring in the new! It's such a good time to ask for that raise or move to that new place you've been lusting after. What do we have to lose?
